The Legend of Mr. Thai
Aside from preparing delicious Thai food, Phidwt has a legendary life story. Over 20 years ago, as a Thai worker in Poland, he faced injustice on a strawberry farm. Promised 100 zloty/day for 8-hour shifts, he was paid 60 zloty for 12 hours, with no overtime. His living conditions were cramped—sharing a small room with eight others. Complaints to the farm owner and agency were ignored. Seeking help, the Thai embassy dismissed him, doubting his story since no other workers complained.
Phidwt’s Fight for Justice and Survival
The embassy required solid evidence—photos, pay stubs, and signatures from others facing the same issues. Phidwt built his case, and the Polish Department of Labor improved wages and conditions. He became a hero, but the farm owner and agency retaliated, assigning him dangerous tasks. Fearing for his life, he fled. Lost and desperate, he met a kind German man who owned upscale Polish restaurants. The man offered him a job and shelter, but only if Phidwt could pass his challenge.
Phidwt’s Journey to Mr. Thai Restaurant
Phidwt’s challenge was to create five noodle dishes with unique sauces, relying on memories of his mother’s cooking. Nervous, he presented the dishes, and to his joy, they were loved. Hired on the spot, he brought his family to Poland, managed multiple restaurants, and helped a woman named Phanee recover unpaid wages. Recognized for aiding the Thai community, he returned to Thailand during the pandemic. Later, Phanee invited him to the U.S., and together they co-founded Mr. Thai Restaurant.
